Whats our story?

We are just amateurs. Dreamers. What-if askers. Go-against-the-grainers and creators that wanted to make something that makes the world different. We know that it’s easy to recognise the reality of injustice without ever finding a solution. But we believe that change can begin with one small intentional act. We believe that we can re-imagine consumerism into a way of giving rather than just getting. JUST THREADS exists to help Right Wrongs in the world.

We all love a good story of a person, or group of people, that creatively set out to make a change for the better, right? There are plenty of examples, but a recent favourite is the one about the two twenty-year-old mates from Brisbane who saw the staggering statistics of homelessness in their own country and just wanted to make a difference. I don’t know what their initial thoughts were but I’m pretty sure that, “we are going to fix the problem of homelessness” wasn’t one of them. Instead, they came up with a way to restore dignity, raise health standards and reduce the strain on resources by converting a van into a free mobile launderette service for the homeless. That’s it. They saw a problem and instead of saturating social media with statistics or accusatory statements, they installed two washing machines and two tumble dryers into their van and set out to make the world different. After just over a year since their first wash, they've been able to extend to five different areas of Australia with 260 volunteers to be a practical presence to those who are often overlooked. This is exactly the kind of stuff that makes me want to jump up and down and do cartwheels!

Different in mission, but similar in passion to see change, Just Threads was born from ‘re-imaging consumerism into a way of giving rather than just getting.’ Clothes are something that we all need (unless you want jail time for indecent exposure) and many of us don't stop at need, we buy because we want… and want some more. We know that it’s unrealistic to think that we can completely change that. But, we CAN do something. We CAN create an ethical clothing company that is socially responsible. We CAN channel money from our sales to support some of the worlds greatest causes. In doing so, everyone CAN be a part of the change for a better world - vendor, trader and consumer alike.

Ultimately, our hearts beat to see the wrongs of this world made right and our ‘vehicles’ for doing so is through clothing and community. It’s easy, really. We begin by partnering with charities who are already making a difference. With only fair trade products, we print the designs created by our team of talented artists who create unique designs for each charity. Through trade, we give £5 from each sale to the featured charity, partnering with a new one every three months.

Yeah, sure - we have huge dreams of handing over cheques for thousands of pounds to support the work of charities who are fighting against exploitation. We would love to assist in charities building wells in communities that have no access to clean water and to see woman and children cared for in homes of refuge. But the reality is, it’s going to take time. We’re in it for the long haul because we want, more than anything, to bring about justice where injustice has had the upper hand for far too long.

Oh, right. Who exactly are “we” anyway? Well…

Amy is all things creative and techie. She often gets carried away with dreams and is never short of a new idea. She adds a lot of humour & heart to the team, and is absolutely irreplaceable.

Dayna has a beautiful creative mind, and little “Dayna touches” can be seen in every area of Just Threads. She is passionate about justice and it’s so clearly visible in everything that she does. She reminds us daily of why we do what we do, and that is invaluable.
